LIFE STILLS # 2

see  LIFE  STILLS # 1

blue      Today was warm enough to venture in the studio, after two months of drawing in a tiny bedroom.

I’m continuing with the “Life Stills” project. It’s

moving on fairly slow, for the moment I’m just

cleaning, sorting everything out and waiting for the

spring art materials shipment to arrive.

LIFE STILLS #1

It’s been a very intense week here in the village of Inoteşti, somewhere 100 km above Bucharest. Mothers ran from home leaving their children behind, youngsters drank ţuică to kill their toothache, dogs were frozen dead on the main roads, while I was discovering the realm of the unique and amazingly difficult technique of Watercolour, which I have very rarely approached in the past.

Gift #2, watercolor on Hahnemuhle Aquarellkarton, 17x24cm, 2013

For the last couple of months I’ve been gathering stuff.
All kinds of stuff. Found, discarded, used, household electronics,  whatever life cannot digest and whatever bits of cardboard my stove doesn’t need to light the fire.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2013 !

During the last couple of years I struggled with an issue which may be concerning many young artists:

WHAT SHALL I DO WITH ALL MY PAST SKETCHES,

DRAWINGS AND PAINTINGS ?

old-sketches-1-r

Many years ago the answer lied in the garbage,
but I realised one can never be certain whether
a tiny sketch is good at all, or extremely bad ?

I invite you to see two of the series of works made from such diverse sketches :

COLLAGES OF OLD SKETCHES

  MIGRATIONS

It took years until I could ‘sift’ my past drawings, while keeping them all in storage for future reference. Having the tendency to refer only to the quality of  a drawing, to its perceptual intensity, I had forgotten the importance of the memories which gave birth to all these sorts of life sketches. Although I’m generally more than happy to throw any object whatsoever, it became impossible to throw bits of myself filtered through drawing. Continue reading

DUST exhibition opening

I am happy to announce that my project ” DUST “ will be exhibited at Melenia Art Gallery (www.meleniagallery.com) in Bucharest starting the 20th of September and until the 17th of November.

I have been working on the “Dust” series of works for over one year now. You can see it on my new website (it’s still under construction!) :

             www.maiaoprea.com

The opening of the DUST solo exhibition is on Thursday 20 of September 2012, at 19.30.

The “Dust” project’s compositions are comprised of hieratic figures who are trapped in a kind of spherical torn. The works are sensorially situated in between humane and the brute with its formal anthropomorphic and zoomorphic approach,. The investigative basis of “Dust“ consists of “catching” the state of inner chaos, which seems to accompany the creative self when it “erupts”. However, the manner of expression is antithetical to this „eruption“, manifesting itself as a sort of tactile void.

Joining the “Dust” project, the series of artworks united under the title of „Transmographies” and “Mummifications” combine in a profoundly personal manner diverse areas of artistic expression, such as airbrushing, collage, sculpture and engraving.

The characters which populate the space of these works are emphasized precisely by their lack of individuality: elongated figures with bodies and limbs fanning around, as if drifting into the surroundings. They are ordinary bodies centred around the supressed memories or half-forgotten intimacies that are personal and at the same time as individual to each of us. It is a silent violence, emanating from figures that cannot walk, see or speak.

I will post photos and videos with the exhibition after the opening!

MY STUDIO

studio-inside-3At the end of August my new studio was partially finished.

There’s still more to be done-bought-constructed, but what’s most important is that I’ve started painting again. Continue reading
